ER Edition Part II - one week to the day after JJ's head injury at the baseball game, he slipped and fell on a plastic ball while in the "Kid's Zone" at the gym, running to greet me as I picked him up. This one resulted on a concussion. He was fine for several hours, then threw up at dinner once, went to bed. I kept him in bed with me to monitor him. The previous week they directed us in the ER to bring him back if he threw up twice. So I hoped maybe he just had an upset stomach, though in the back of my mind (o.k. close to the front of my mind) I was hoping it wasn't related to his head. It was. He woke up at about 5:30 a.m. and started throwing up. We went to the ER, they confirmed a concussion but assured us he was 100% o.k. neurologically given tests they performed. They encouraged us not to have a CAT scan given this and the overuse of scans for little people. We went home, he threw up/slept most of the day. I was worried he'd need IV fluids by the evening. He woke up the next day, asked for fluids, asked to eat, and had regained a lot of energy. He went to school 1/2 day, and took a nap after school the rest of that week and into the next. Other than that, he seems to be back in action.
ER Edition Part III - that one has to do with Mommy. I slipped off the last step of the house 5.31.11 on the way to the bus stop in the a.m. I hobbled to the car, got JJ on the bus, hobbled back to the car and went to work, thinking it was no big deal. Three hours later I had a baseball-sized swelling on my ankle, and off I went to the ER. It's not broken, just sprained. Not a lot of pain, mainly I just feel like a big 'ole sloth. Joaquin has totally stepped up his game with being a little helpful. Sometimes I feel like an auctioneer with him. "Pick up the blue bag, blue bag, blue bag, put it on the table table table table," etc. I'm so grateful that this didn't happen last year, I don't know what I would have done as he couldn't have helped me as much as he's doing now.
On to other topics. No more ER entries, knock wood! More of my Sticky-Note observations are listed below.
Easter
JJ believes that instead of the "Easter Bunny," there is the "Chocolate Chicken." Think about it. Makes sense.
Royal Wedding Day
Mommy got up at 4:30 a.m. to watch the British Royals, William and Catherine, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, tie the knot. JJ got up at 6:00 a.m., per usual, just as the carriages were in procession to the palace. JJ said: "Is this the Boy Scouts? Regarding the bride and groom, "They don't get a chance to ride the horses?"
How Things Work
One night at the end of his time in the bathtub, JJ looked at the drain and asked, "Why does the water go in a circle down there." Good question. Something about gravity? What do I know? Gotta start going to the How Things Work website starting right now.
Kids Will Be Kids
One night I went into the bathroom to see what JJ was up to as I heard a long stream of uncontrollable giggles that just wouldn't stop. I walked in to find he had placed a sticker from dance class on his penis. He couldn't stand himself, he thought he was soooo funny and loved the thrill of being mischevious.
One day I told JJ I would be mowing the lawn after his nap. He replied, "Mom, I'll move the lawn after my nap."
JJ is a regular back seat driver, frequently telling me to slow down or "watch what you're doing." Not that I need it.
When JJ is mad at me, he will sometimes say, "I'm not your favorite grown-up," meaning "You're not my favorite grown-up."
One night I was telling JJ how precious he was to me. He replied, "Just like 'Mars Needs Mom's?" This is a book we love in which the Mom says to his little boy, "I'll love you to the ends of the universe." Just exactly like that.
Linguistic Cuties
"Did you got your keys?" equals "Do you have your keys?"
"Tormado" equals "Tornado"
One day JJ was eating some chips while lying down on the couch. I directed him to sit up while eating. He replied, "So I don't coach?" (ie. "So I don't choke").
School is almost out and we are excited. JJ has had a great year at Border Star, and at the same time we are excited to transfer to Foreign Language Academy. If all goes well, he can attend there K-8th, and become fluent in Spanish in the process. I really like the school, it is more convenient to us, and I like the stability of the school in an unstable school district. Hopefully we're set. Meanwhile he gets to return to the Ancilla Center where he attended for two years of preschool and several snow days this winter. I'm so grateful he can fill in the gaps at the Ancilla Center. The staff loves him there because they started our family journey with us and know first-hand how far he's come.
One last grateful thing - Many of my friends have stepped up to be helpful with playdates, picking up JJ from school, getting groceries, finding crutches for me, mowing our lawn, etc. etc. this week. One of the most challenging and best things about being a single mom has been learning to ask people for help when I need it. It's getting easier and I'm grateful for the help!
